The world still waits for you to write any program longer than 8 lines,
in any language, be it Forth, Lisp or Scheme.

How about 26000 lines in Visual Basic? 50000 in Cobol? 75000 in
assembler? 25000 in PL/I? 20000 in C sharp? 10000 in C? 1000 in TI-79
machine language, a compiler and run time in 1K for Mouse, a Forth
knockoff?

So why do you make a joke of it? Is it perhaps because you're a feeb
and this is the only reply you can make to my verse?

My use of the word "bilgewater" (or, more properly, "bilge-water",
according to Chambers) was not intended to be a joke.

I wouldn't call that "verse". It wouldn't even qualify as doggerel.

But why would you want to serialisa a complete memory pool?
Would it not be sufficient if, on serialisation, the individual
objects are serialised and on deserialisation it is ensured the new
objects are created within a suitable memory pool?

Have you actually verified that this does not work in the way
described here?
Because I would expect that the swizzle trickery (if implemented
correctly) writes out a marker to indicate: on deserialisation, ensure
this pointer refers to the object that was reconstructed from the data
'over there'.

I would say that trying to serialise a memory pool is a sure way to
madness. And it is not needed.
The exact way in which the various objects are allocated within the
memory pools should not be part of the state of your game. The fact
that objects A and B are located in pool P and object C is in pool Q
is information that should be known statically at the places where the
objects are created, and if you change your mind and move B to pool Q
as well, then reloading an old state (from before the change) should
reflect the new reality.

Thank you for your confirmation Paavo, I'm sticking to ostringstream
for ease of implementation - no need for further optimization yet.

So then, here is my mod of your S class (that would be also a mod of
the class posted by Stuart Golodetz in that other thread - I'm unsure
about posting this code there too...)
I only added the ability to feed it with all standard manipulators,
just like I've done in the other thread - seems to be enough:
-------
#include <iostream>
#include <sstream>
#include <iomanip>
class S {
private:
std::ostringstream os_stream;
public:
S() {}
S( const char* s ): os_stream(s) {}
S( const std::string& s ): os_stream(s) {}
template<class T> S& operator<<(const T& t) {
os_stream << t;
return *this;
}
S& operator<<(std::ostream& (*f) (std::ostream&)) {
os_stream << f;
return *this;
}
operator std::string() const {
return os_stream.str();
}
};
int main() {
std::string s = S() << std::fixed << std::setprecision(1)
<< 3.333 << std::endl;
std::string s2 = S() << std::setw(5) << std::setfill('#')
<< std::internal << -42 << std::endl;
std::cout << s << s2;
return 0;
}
-------
The above produces the following output as expected:
-------
3.3
-##42
-------
I don't think it's the case to extend it in order to access active
flags, after all, this class is only meant to build strings on the
fly. I've also removed the str() method, just for the same reason.
Heck, it's a shame, I thought I could make a Columbus' Egg in this
way:
-------
// doesn't work as expected, doesn't compile when used
class SS : public std::ostringstream {
public:
SS() {}
SS( const char* s ) : std::ostringstream(s) {}
SS( const std::string& s ): std::ostringstream(s) {}
operator std::string() const { // doesn't work as expected,
return str(); // 'cause it doesn't compile when
used
}
};
-------
...but the compiles chokes on the implicit string conversion (seems
like the ostringstream resolves to void* and the implicit conversion
mistakes it for const char*, completely overlooking the operator
implemented for the SS class
Never mind, the S class mod above works just fine and performs just
like using ostringstream directly.
Thanks everybody for your help, really appreciated.
Best regards,
Francesco

You're right that operator+ will usually have quadratic time, but
that's an apples to oranges comparison. The more accurate comparison
would be << to +=. We'd normally expect those to mean roughly the
same thing, and work at about the same speed -- in fact, the obvious
implementation of operator<< would be little more than a thunk for
operator+= (or, equivalently, append).

So, as per my posts, I set the file encoding to UTF-8...made sure my
environment is UTF-8 (Linux locale)...and am trying to determine how
to set the runtime (console) output in Eclipse to be UTF-8 (I have
posted to an Eclipse forum, still no response). I figure I shouldn't
have to do anything else in my code. I don't know why it's not
working.

I'm not planning on doing anything extensive with Unicode, which is
why I'm not pursuing a more encompassing route. Obviously if I had a
big Unicode issue on my hand, I would have started to think about a
more long-range solution. I definitely would be thinking of a UTF-8
library or incorporating some functionality but right now this is just
on the nit level.

It's an iterator that is returned by a member function.

If you call something like container.begin() or container.end(), it
returns an iterator. You can assign or copy that iterator with an
assurance that doing so will never throw.

Welcome to comp.lang.c++! Read this first.
This post is intended to give the new reader an introduction to reading
and posting in this newsgroup. We respectfully request that you read
all the way through this post, as it helps make for a more pleasant
and useful group for everyone.
First of all, please keep in mind that comp.lang.c++ is a group for discussion
of general issues of the C++ programming language, as defined by the ANSI/ISO
language standard. If you have a problem that is specific to a particular system
or compiler, you are much more likely to get complete and accurate answers in a
group that specializes in your platform. A listing of some newsgroups is given
at the end of this post.
The FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) list has a wealth of information for
both the new and veteran C++ programmer. No matter what your experience
level, you are encouraged to read the entire list, if only to familiarize
yourself with what answers are available to minimize redundant replies.
The comp.lang.c++ FAQ is available at http://www.parashift.com/c++-faq-lite/
If the FAQ list does not help, then many regular readers of this group
are happy to assist with problems of standard C++. We have only a few
requests that we ask be adhered to, for the benefit of all:
* Please put a short summary in the subject line. Descriptions such as
"HELP!!!!!!" are not helpful, and many regular posters ignore such
requests. A good example is, "Problem with Virtual Functions."
* State the question or the problem clearly and concisely. Describe what
you are trying to do, and the problem you are running into. Include all
relevant error messages.
* Include the smallest, complete and compilable program that exhibits your
problem. As a rule, posters in comp.lang.c++ will not do homework, but will
give helpful hints if you have shown some willingness to try a solution.
* comp.lang.c++ is forum for discussion, and as such some regular posters do
not give E-mail replies. Very often follow-ups to postings have corrections,
so plan on taking part in the discussion if you post a question. If you
do receive e-mail replies, it is considered polite to post a summary.
* Don't post in HTML format. Many readers of this newsgroup don't use
newsreaders which can handle HTML postings.
* If you have to include source code in your post, include the
source in the message body. Don't use attachments. A lot
of contributors to this newsgroup won't even notice the existence

A note on comp.lang.c++ etiquette: Accuracy is valued very highly in this
newsgroup; therefore posts are frequently corrected, sometimes perhaps
too harshly, and often to the annoyance of new posters who consider the
correction trivial. Do not take it personally; the best way to fit in
with comp.lang.c++ is to express gratitude for the correction, move on,
and be more careful next time.
This is a very busy group, so these requests are designed to make it as
pleasant and efficient an experience as possible. We hope it proves
