Hi Hicham

Because the first one is copy assignment operator, but the second one
is equality operator.
The first one is declared and defined by compiler implicitly with
default behavior,
but in equality operator case , you have to declare and define its
behavior explicitly.

If the compiler was to automatically generate code for the equality
comparison (which would apply the equality comparison to every member),
wouldn't the next question be why the compiler is not doing the same for
operator<() and the other comparison operators?

But in that case, how would the compiler implement those operators?

"An implicitly-declared default constructor for a class is implicitly

In case anyone is actually interested in the writing of a parser
in lisp that implements regular expressions, in part, I recommend this

which displays in its entirety a lisp program remarkable (in my
opinion)
for its brevity and generality.

Somehow I think this thread is not about lisp or regular expressions,

I've learned from experience to use an auto_ptr instead of a raw
pointer for my class variables, as follows -

class Person
{
public:
Person(const bool isSingle=true):lover(isSingle?0:new Lover() ){}

since its a very good approach to avoiding memory leaks.

But what about when that pointer points to memory allocated using new
[]?

const auto_ptr<Lover> lover;

const CompirerErrors* compirerErrors;

how would you normally deal with such a case with regard to avoiding
memory leaks?

For example -

might leak when operator=() throws - when calling new, or when
assigning each member of offspring and compirerErrors.

Therefore how should I implement operator=()? How about this as a
generic solution to memory leakage in operator=()?

If copying is disabled, or if a deep copy is always performed, just
use std::vector. No need to reinvent the wheel.

If you want the array to be shared, I think there's a smart pointer
for that purpose in the boost library. You could relatively easily code
one yourself.

If you want the ownership to be transferred, implement your own
auto_array (if you google that name you'll probably find implementations
made by others).

If you want copy-on-write, then you'll have to implement that yourself.

Thanks for your reply. Since I'm still learning, does the code I
provided in my first post avoid memory leakage? I had taught about
using std::vector actually in this fashion -

private:
std::vector<Offspring> offspring;
std::vector<CompirerErrors> compirerErrors;

...

Person& operator=(const Person& person)
{
if(person==this)
return this;

try
{
tempPerson.offspring = person.tempOffspring;
compirerErrors = person.compirerErrors;
}
catch(...)
{
throw PersonException();
}
...
}

But if -

tempPerson.offspring = person.tempOffspring

were to throw an exception here, wouldn't I end up with a Person
object which is in a corrupt state? How should I deal with this.

This might be convenient sometimes. However, it actually makes the same
work twice, namely building/concatenating the output. In addition, the
streams are specially constructed for efficient adding a lot of data,
whereas the += operator of std::string might not be so efficient in this
regard.

From the convenience side the << operators need multiple lines,
cluttering up the code. When performance is not critical, I would use
something like this instead:

#include <iostream>
#include <boost/lexical_cast.hpp>

template<typename T> std::string str(T x) {
return boost::lexical_cast<std::string>(x);
}

int main() {
int i = 11;
std::cout << ("Eleven==" + str(i) + ", twelve==" + str(i+1)) <<
