Not necessarily Linux specific, but it obviously depends on the
OS and the hardware. And I'm not sure what you mean by
"pretend"; if Linux is configured correctly (it usually isn't),
or if there's enough memory and other processes aren't using it
all (usually the case on the machines I use), there's no
problem; the vector is real, and fully usable.

Yes. Depending on the implementation of the library, I'd expect
either length_error or bad_alloc under Windows, because Windows
limits 32 bit programs to half of the address space. But that's
just a particularity of Windows---Linux limits them to 3/4 (I
think), and Solaris allows 100% of the address space, at least
on a Sparc.

If you attempt to extend the vector beyond max_size(), the
behavior isn't undefined. Nor if the vector can't allocate the
necessary memory.

Putting mismatched braces in a macro is a nice trick to render
the code unreadable. There are very few cases where it is
justified (although admittedly, this may be one). Why not just
use a class, which reads the timer in the constructor and the
destructor? (Presumably, you'll also want to capture the
results somewhere, so the constructor needs a reference to
that.)

Having said that... All his macro gains him is one line, that
which declares the variable. IMHO, it's not worth it.

There is no strlcpy in C or C++. There is a proposal for a TR
to C with asafe strcpy_s, but for the moment, it's just a
proposal, and at any rate, it will be a TR, and not part of the
language (so I don't know what C++ will do with it). FWIW: it's
implemented in VC++ (at least with the compiler options I use),
but not in g++ under Linux (again, with the compiler options I
usually use).

Not really. I don't know of any mainframe which uses base 2 for
its floating point: IBM uses base 16, and both Unisys
architectures use base 8; Unisys MCP also normalizes in a
somewhat strange way. The fact that the bases are powers of two
means that the operation can still be done with masking and
shifting, but it requires a bit more than a base 2
representation would.

You start by saying "not really", but from what I can see, you then
go on to pretty much confirm what I said -- that while these machines
aren't binary, they still work in a power of two, which means that
frexp/ldexp will probably be faster than pow() for all of them.

I have to admit I'm a bit surprised though -- I thought IBM's
mainframes used decimal floating point, not hexadecimal...

Similar to daily plans are the stand-up meetings. Here are some

It won't make much sense if you have a team of 2 including yourself
but you always have the options to tailor it to your needs. But such
catch-ups surely help provided you have the right implementation such
that it doesn't go much off-track and it isn't taking too much time.
Some of the pitfalls are available on the link above like: story-
telling.

WBS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_breakdown_structure) might
provide you some control too. It will probably ensure that the team
knows what a particular delivery unit is and would help measure the
progress better with clarity both for you and your team.

I must say that I have not been in a management/lead role myself but I
have been a relatively new practitioner of the above 2 and they have
somewhat helped in terms of greater clarity for the team, measuring
progress, sharing knowledge among the team. Important is that the team
including the lead/manager has the belief/buy-in, where mostly the
challenge lies.

I'm not talking about one-liners vs. 100-liners.

Many functions which may be desirable to be inlined because of
efficiency are often 3-5 lines long, sometimes even a bit more. Add to
this the space taken by the curly braces, plus possibly all the function
parameters not fitting one single line, and you will have short
functions taking considerable amounts of visual space.

I'd say using RAII correctly was very much a programmer

even things that are bult on top of memory may need specialised
cleanup. Sockets, Database Connections, GDI handles.

Then there are application specific things. Like calls or
messages or drawable objects. Even to use garbage collection
requires that you remeber to forget about the object. The dead
call has to be removed from the list of active calls *somehow*
