The difference type is signed because when you do a "iter2 - iter1",
it accounts for the possibility that iter1 is larger (or, more
precisely, points to a value which is at a higher position in the
vector) than iter2, in which case the [iter1,iter2] range is actually
reversed.

If you know for sure that iter2 will always be >= iter1, then an
unsigned difference type could be used for their difference, in which
case you get the whole range of the maximum capacity of the vector.

If your target system uses integers using two's complement
representation (as basically all computers in this universe do), you can
simply cast the result of the difference to an unsigned type (size_t)
and you'll get the correct result even if the temporary value (before
the cast) had overflowed.

Ah, I can finally see the source of the misunderstanding.

The algorithm I mentioned was for machines at one end of the spectrum
-- basically IEEE 754 or something very similar.

I also mentioned machines with "weird" representations, for which
frexp/ldexp could be quite slow -- quite possibly slower than pow,
being the important point under the circumstances. Though not stated
directly, that was more or less a hint that the only way to be sure
about things was to profile, not depend on the "fact" that frexp and
ldexp would necessarily be the fastest approach.

I did not say, or mean to imply, that there was no middle ground
between those extremes. I guess since I didn't mention the middle
ground, I can understand how somebody could infer that I didn't
intend for there to be any.

That was true many years ago but Fortran has fallen a long way behind now.
Applications like numerical methods from linear algebra operating on
matrices with single, double or single/double complex elements were
Fortran's last refuge for many years but even they have come under fire
now.

For example, I recently implemented QR decomposition in F#:

Fortran is not only incapable of expressing the algorithm that generically,
it is also up to 3x slower than F#!

The reason is the efficiency of parallelism in F#, using the wait-free
work-stealing concurrent deques of the Task Parallel Library for the
efficient dynamic load balancing of fine-grained parallel work items.

If Fortran cannot even compete there, where it is strongest, then it has no
hope for other applications. Hence the defacto-standard libraries for
things like FFTs have been written in a mix of higher-level languages and C
for many years now. For most scientific computing, it is no longer
practically feasible to use Fortran because the language is too cumbersome
and inexpressive.

word "probably" - there is no absolute here even WRT inline.

However, note what I was replying to - would you really have page-long
inline functions?

Absolutely. I said something about the polarising effect of replying
in threads elsewhere - I doubt our positions are really that different
in practice. For example, are you really claiming that page-long
functions should be inlined? Depending on font selection, I'd guess
you could get over 100 text lines on a single A4 side - the point I
was replying to wasn't about a few long names and a single if/else
conditional.

BTW - even the dumb terminals of 20 years ago could manage 132
characters across. I don't want to start another religious war here,
but allowing myself those extra 52 characters obviously allows me a
lot more opportunity to keep things on a single line. Subtract the
function name and parameters, and I've probably more than doubled the
amount of remaining space available for the body compared with your 80
character limit.

In that context, a single line function containing a simple if/else
conditional and referencing a long name or three is perfectly
reasonable.

I don't really agree. Sure, planning before coding is a good thing.
But "Rose" I assume refers to the UML tool, and UML is really just an
incomplete visual programming language - only a bit more complex and
confusing to work with than most plain text programming languages.
