We see the serpent today as a snake, and that's our frame of reference. But Genesis 3 states that the serpent was more subtil/crafty than all of God's other creatures. You don't generally think of snakes as being intelligent, crafty, but rather very honed instincts for attacking, which I believe is their post-sin state, and not their pre-sin state.
